Red Hiromi Plums

Our last CSA bag of the year included Bosc or Bartlett pears, a mix of Apples (Fuji and/or Arkansas Black, Golden Delicious and Pink Lady), Rainbow chard,  Watermelon or Daikon Radish and Yellow Onions as well as any Potatoes, Green Tomatoes or other varieties we could pick for our final harvest.  Members also received some of Tiny’s Fruit N’ Nut Mixes as a season-ending thank you gift.

Fresh from the Farm contained fifteen (!) seasonal recipes to help you make the most of the harvest.  Thank you for a great season and we look forward to growing for you again in 2011!

This week is the next to last pickup day for your 2010 CSA with Tiny’s Organic family farm!

Members can look forward to seeing an Apple Mix, Bosc Pears, Farm Potato Mix, Red or Yellow Onions and Winter Squash, either Acorn, Butternut, Delicata or Sugar Pie Pumpkin in the CSA bag tomorrow.

Taking a look at our ‘Fresh from the Farm’ member newsletter,  in ‘Crop Talk’ Farmer Greg reminds us that Tiny is raising turkeys this year and some are still available for order and our farm crew shares some simple and savory recipes to help you make the most of your share of the harvest.  Why not try Katherine’s Savory Stuffed Squash, the Farm Salad, Grilled Salt & Vinegar Potatoes or a Brie, Ham & Pear Sandwich this week?

You can look forward to two classic Wenatchee Valley apple varieties in your CSA bag this week, Red Delicious and Golden Delicious.  Arkansas Black, Gala and Fuji apples may also make an appearance along with Golden D’Anjou Pears, Purple Mizuna, Arugula or Jericho Romaine, Merlot or Freckles lettuce, Winter Squash and Carrots, Radishes, Fennel or Tomatoes.

Farmer Greg has a quick autumn update from the farm in ‘Crop Talk’ and we have several seasonal recipes for you on the back page of this week’s ‘Fresh from the Farm’, including a very adaptable Harvest Cake recipe.

UPDATE:  It looks like there were smaller amounts of some varieties ready for harvest than we expected due to cool weather during the weekend and early part of the week!

Most members ended up receiving either Arugula, Purple Mizuna, Lettuce, Kale, Collards, Carrots, Fennel, Radish or Tomatoes in today’s bag instead of Purple Mizuna and Arugula and Carrots or Radishes or Fennel or Tomatoes.

The Harvest List is our best estimate of what we will be able to put in the bag put together when we enter the fields Monday morning at the beginning of the weekly harvest.  As mentioned in the weekly ‘Fresh from the Farm’ newsletter, “This newsletter is written before harvest is complete.  Below is a list of what we hope to put in your bag.  For peak freshness, we harvest at the last possible minute.  The varieties ready at that time are added to your bag.”

If a specific variety listed is not in your bag it means the farm had to make a last minute substitution or change to the contents and have added either another variety not listed or extra of another already on the list to round out the selection in your CSA bag.

Chilly weather ended the harvest of our warm weather crops so our farm crew has picked a nice mix of cool weather varieties for you this week.

You can look forward to citrusy Hawaii or Spitzenburg (an antique variety) Apples, Bosc or D’Anjou Pears, Flavorich Pluots with Red Russian Kale, Prize Choy or Jericho Romaine, Merlot or Freckles Lettuce, Pumpkin or Winter Squash and either Carrots, Radish or Fennel in this week’s CSA bag.

In this week’s ‘Fresh from the Farm’, Farmer Greg details how using row crop cover helps us protect the vegetables we grow for you and we’ve included a good variety of recipes like Pumpkin & Feta Muffins, Fruit Vinegar,  Baked Pears and Thai Pumpkin Soup to help you make the most of your share of the harvest.  Happy eating!

Winter Squash season has begun!  All members will receive the first of our Winter Squash harvest in the weekly bag today along with Hawaii and Honeycrunch Apples, D’Anjou Pears, Arctic Snow Nectarines, September Sun Peaches, Angelino Plums and both Flavor King and Flavorich Pluots.

Rounding out the vegetable varieties are Heirloom Tomatoes, Dandelion Greens and a bonus of Prize Choy, Purple Mizuna or Arugula.

The latest ‘Fresh from the Farm’ newsletter has a basic Heirloom Tomato Soup recipe you can make now and enjoy right away or freeze for up to six months.  Happy eating!

Farmer Greg kicks off the week with Hail Talk, er, that is Crop Talk and a rundown of the effects a recent hailstorm had on the fruit and vegetables we are growing for you at Tiny’s farm.

UPDATE:  While harvesting yesterday afternoon, we realized that there were not enough carrots or fennel for every member’s bag this week so you may instead receive eggplant or extra of another variety already included in the above list such as pears or nectarines.

We have had another cool start to the week on Tiny’s farm in Wenatchee, however that has not stopped our farm crew from picking some delicious varieties for our CSA members this week.

Members can expect to see Gala Apples, Arctic Queen Nectarines, Golden Princess Peaches, Red Hiromi Plums, and both Dapple Dandy and Flavor Queen Pluots in this week’s bag.

Veggies include Astro Arugula and either Jericho Romaine, Sylvesta Green Butterhead or Nevada Green Summer Crisp Lettuce for salads along with heirloom Lemon Cucumbers and some of the eight varieties of Tomatoes that were ready for picking, Arkansas Traveler, Aunt Ginny, Brandywine, Burbank, Cherokee Purple, Chocolate Stripes, or Hazel Mae.

The heavy rain today has made it very hard to pick produce for our CSA members but we are working with the weather as best we can.

Wenatchee CSA members who pick up at the farm will be able to get their bags after 4 pm today instead of after 2 pm as usual.  East Wenatchee, Seattle, Eastside and Tacoma members will have delivery at the normal times tomorrow.

Tiny’s crew is picking Blushingstar Peaches, one of our most beautiful and delicious peach varieties, for our CSA members this week along with Golden Princess Peaches, Dapple Dandy Pluots and Western Sweet Nectarines.

Look for Jericho Romaine and/or Sylvesta Green Butterhead Lettuce, Bell Pepper and Cucumber Mixes and Melon to be included in your bag as well.  Summer Squash season is winding up so only a few members will receive squash and we have our eye on another fruit or vegetable variety (or maybe both) for the bag but will have to see how the harvest goes!

We started to pick Cruiser Melons (a type of cantaloupe) this week so some members will receive that variety and others may receive our Honey Orange, Snow Leopard or Sun Jewel Melon.  Members who do not receive melon will find extra stone fruit, Bell Peppers or the first of our Tomato or Eggplant harvest in their bag instead.
