Always on the lookout for new ways to make the most of the farm’s harvest, about two years ago Tiny started freezing a portion of certain crops to use in making our classic smoothies sold on sunny days at Pike Place Market and at Seattle’s annual Green Festival.
Regularly freezing some of the fruit from your CSA share is a great way to make sure you have plenty to enjoy after the growing season is over and one of the simplest ways to use that fruit is to make your own healthful and delicious smoothie.
Simply cut your stone fruits in half and remove the seed/pit. Seal the fruit halves well in a Ziploc freezer bag. Your bagged plums and pluots will be easiest to work with later if stored in a single layer and frozen flat on a cookie sheet making stackable bricks.
When the winter rains come, bring back memories of sunny days by taking out your frozen fruit, adding organic juice and blending for the best all-fruit homemade smoothie you have ever had!
Stocking up to put up is a great way to enjoy local organic produce in the off-season. From mid-June to mid-November, many of our CSA members find it useful to supplement their weekly farm share with an occasional visit to Tiny’s Organic at neighborhood Farmers Markets where they simultaneously indulge in the current harvest and prepare for the off-season by stocking up on favorites like cherry plums and yellow flesh peaches.
